The White Devil

October 3rd - November 15th 2008

By John Webster

As in this world there are degrees of evils,
So in this world there are degrees of devils...

When the adulterous Bracciano and Vittoria become involved in a dangerous affair, an explosive conclusion seems inevitable. A series of shattering events are set in motion that lead to brutal betrayal and murder, exposing the duplicity and hypocrisy within Italian court life and the church.

Webster’s classic play is an exploration into the maze of conscience – where passion and revenge are all consuming, friends become enemies and human corruption threatens to bring chaos to all.

The renowned Jacobean playwright John Webster is also known for his dark tragedy The Duchess of Malfi. Director Jonathan Munby has worked extensively with the RSC, and in the West End, and most recently directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Globe Theatre.
